Josl Mountain Lounging Hotel Review

josl-mountain-lounging-06Looking to get away from it all? Want to have a nice ski vacation this year? Then look no further than the Josl Mountain lounging hotel. Located in picturesque Obergurgl, Austria, this hotel has everything you could possibly wish for. Well, almost everything. I will say up front that this particular hotel does not accept children under 16 as guests. It might seem harsh but it definitely changes the atmosphere during your stay. If you do have children there are plenty of other family friendly choices.

The hotel is right in the heart of Obergurgl and the ski lift is literally 100 meters away. The rates are fairly decent for the area as well. We paid around 80 EUR per night per person for a double room with “halb pension”. In case you are wondering, that means breakfast and dinner were included in the price. They also have a small “brot zeit” or snack time each day from 3 to 5 p.m. As with most places, drinks are always on you. The beer was good and not terribly expensive but don’t opt in for the cocktails! My one pre dinner Gin and tonic ran 12,50 EUR… The food is excellent and you are treated to a five course meal every evening. You are provided a menu at breakfast to choose from one of the three dishes available that night. An excellent salad and cheese bar await you at every meal.

innen_bar1_02The rooms are nice and modern as is the rest of the hotel. They are as comfortable as you could find in any upscale hotel in America. Free wifi is provided and the television has a large selection of channels should you find yourself bored with the skiing. Parking is provided by means of underground parking garage but be aware of your vehicle size. We were able to park our X5 but anything bigger would probably not fit. The front desk was also very eager to park the car for me which I am sure would have resulted in a pointless extra charge. Outdoor parking is also available but scarce. There is a bar downstairs in the basement that really comes to life later on in the night after the apres ski has closed down and the spa on the roof is where all the ladies will want to be. Watch out for the nude and non-nude areas though!

The staff are all very friendly and all spoke flawless English. They are mostly seasonal workers and live in various apartments in the area. Keep in mind that these people work very long hours for a few months of the year to earn what they can. That said, they always had smiles on their faces and were willing to help with anything you needed. The same could be said for almost anyone else in the village. From the ski schools to the shops, everyone speaks english and is more than willing to serve your needs. Obergurgl is a popular spot for skiers from Sweden and the UK so the locals know the drill.

skipiste2_02For the skiers, Obergurgl and Hochgurgl offer an excellent Austrian skiing experience. There is plenty of piste that receives a lot of snow during the season and the whole area is well serviced by various lifts and cars. Typical Austrian cuisine can be found at any of the mountain lodges and the apres ski scene is awesome. Especially the Nederhutte which can be found on the piste just above Obergurgl. It seems like the whole mountain stops there at the end of the day for drinks and music. It is an experience you can’t afford to miss. You check out them out at nederhuette.at.

Overall, Obergurgl is a great place to visit and the Josl Mountain Lounging Hotel is an excellent choice for those who want a more grown up atmosphere. If you don’t want to eat in the hotel you can always chose from one of the many other restaurants available in the village.
