Four Amazing Passes in the Alps You Have to Drive!

Stelvio Pass

stelvio pass

Stelvio Pass is the second highest pass in the Alps at 2757 meters. It may not be the most beautiful pass on the list but it certainly is the most drastic. A total of 48 switchback turns are required to reach the top from the north side. This pass lies just inside Italy but can be reached from Austria by turning south and taking the Landecker Tunnel at the town of Reifenal. Because of the popularity of this pass, it is best to go early in the morning and on a weekday. Stelvio pass descends down into the Italian town of Bormio. If you don’t want to do a return trip, you can take the Umbrail Pass road which starts less than a kilometer from the top as you descend the southern side. This pass will take you on a loop right back to the SS40 and you can head north again to Austria.

So there you have it, four amazing Alpen passes that will make wonderful memories. If you have been to any of these, share your experiences or pictures with us at the StationedinGermany.com Facebook Group! Happy travels!
