At 2469 meters, the Great St. Bernard Pass is the third highest road pass in Switzerland. It connects the town of Martigny in Switzerland to Aosta in Italy. It is the lowest pass lying on the ridge between the two highest summits of the Alps, Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. This is also the pass that Napoleon is famous for crossing with 40,000 troops in the spring of 1800. The St. Bernard breed of dog also originates from this pass. Monks that lived and worked at the hospice founded by Saint Bernard of Menthon in 1049 bred these dogs to search out lost persons. So there you have it, another beautiful Alps pass that also has some great history! If you have a St Bernard with you in Germany you have to take him or her to the place of their ancestors at least once! Click page three below to see the next one!
