If you read the recent article about alternative ski resorts to Garmisch you probably saw Montafon Silvretta. The Explorer Sport Hotel is a very modern, recently constructed hotel located deep in the Montafon Valley in the village of Gaschurn. The hotel itself is located at the beginning of the village and offers quick access to the ski lift which is 500 meters away.
The hotel is advertised as a sport hotel for outdoor enthusiasts and that shows as soon as you walk in the door. A modern layout complete with big screen televisions broadcasting the latest ski updates greet you in the lobby. The entire hotel seems to be decorated in rough wood panelling that gives a nice natural touch. The lobby is also host to ski or bike lockers and a central prep table where you can work on your bike or even wax your skis. This hotel is truly focused on those who came to play in the mountains.
The rooms are very similar to the rest of the hotel in style and comfort. Everything is very “ikea-ish”. There is only one room choice in this hotel and they all look exactly the same. That may or may not be a check in the minus column. The rooms are spacious and all offer balcony access should you wish to cool some beer. There are no refrigerators in the room. Each room is a double though an extra roll away can be had for a small fee.
Booking is normally done as double occupancy but single rates can be had. You can normally find this hotel offered at the various booking sites for around 60 Euro per person per night. Single rates normally run around 70-80 Euro. You can of course find cheaper places to stay but not nearly this nice. Extra charges include covered parking under the building (free outdoor parking available as well) and a 5 Euro per day charge for a ski locker in the lobby should you wish it. Alternatively, you can use the community ski room in the basement.
One of the absolute highlights of this hotel is the breakfast bar. They probably have the nicest breakfast I have seen at any hotel for a long time. They include everything you normally see at an Austrian hotel plus an egg and omelet bar. Another not so common feature is the huge bucket of American style bacon that awaits your taste buds every morning. That truly is a rare find and I would give this place five stars on that fact alone.
The hotel is an excellent choice for those families looking to go out and be active. There is no in house restaurant but they do offer some sandwiches at the lobby bar. This place is for those to get up, throw on their ski pants, wolf down some breakfast, and hit the slopes. The whole staff speaks English and booking is a snap over their website or on the phone. Let us know if you have stayed here as well! How was your trip?
