Avoid German Speeding Tickets With Blitzer.de

One thing you will come to learn quickly in Germany is the fact they do not do active speed patrolling. In America you will be pulled over by an officer for speeding but in Germany they rely on camera systems. No muss, no fuss, just take a picture of you driving your car over the speed limit and send you a nice bill in the mail. The tickets generally are not a large amount and they do not get reported on your American license but it is a speeding ticket all the same.

First things first, we at StationedinGermany.com do not condone speeding of any sort. That being said, after living in Germany for a while it is a common fact that you will get “blitzed” by one of these cameras at some point.  To put it in perspective, speeding fines in Germany start at 10 Euro outside of cities and 15 Euro inside cities for exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 Km/h. That would be 6 MPH. Something that probably wouldn’t even register on an officers mind in America. For a full list of speeding fines in Germany you can read our speeding ticket article here.

So what is the point? Well, in Germany there are two types of cameras, fixed and mobile. Some enterprising German citizens have made a handy little app for your phone that lets you know when you are approaching a camera. The app has a database of fixed cameras and a feature to allow users to input locations of mobile cameras as they find them. Again, the point is not to allow you to speed at your heart’s content but at least let you know when a camera is coming up and remind you to watch your speed. The app is available for free on both the iTunes store and Google Play store. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments below.
