The 10 best places to eat, shop, and visit in Stuttgart

If you are new to Stuttgart, welcome! If you have been here for a little while, maybe you will have some new places to add to your favorites list. Stuttgart is a great city to live in. Stationed here for a little over two years and we are always finding new places to try! Listed below are just a few of my favorite restaurants and places to shop!

Top five favorite restaurants in Stuttgart:

  • Auld Rogue:

Located a few kilometers from Patch Barracks front gate, this is a great place to grab a beer and watch a game. American games that is. Auld Rogue is known for playing beloved NFL Sunday football games along with college football. However, football isn’t the only thing shown there. Their televisions are always on showing some sort of sporting event! They are friendly and welcoming at the Auld Rogue. They offer monthly beer and whiskey tastings. Sit back, relax with friends, grab a beer and some delicious Irish food! Don’t forget about their brunch on Sunday mornings- a traditional Irish breakfast! They speak great English and now accept debit and credit cards for tabs over 20 euro. For more information on their menu, hours and exact location, visit their website.

  • Thai Rainbow Garden:

Located in Böblingen, just down the street from Panzer Barracks, this is a great restaurant to meet friends and have a relaxing meal. The inside of this restaurant is calming with a huge fish tank sitting in the middle. The waiters are very friendly and amicable! We have been four times now and every time, the food gets better and better. Unfortunately, they do not have a website but you can find reviews on Yelp and Foursquare. Their hours are Monday-Sunday 11:30-2:30 and 5:30-11:30 and they accept euros, credit and debit cards! Their address is: Postplatz 8 71032 Böblingen, Germany. I would highly recommend making a reservation before going! Don’t forget to try the Pad Thai! Their phone number is +49 7031 232127

  • Brauhaus:

Serving traditional German food and drink, this is one of our favorites to take guests upon arriving in Stuttgart! This is also a great place for birthday celebrations or going away parties. On nice days, you can sit outside on their patio and let the kids play on the playground while you and your guests converse. I would highly recommend making a reservation as this restaurant fills up quite fast. They do accept credit and debit cards, but I bring euro because they are always so busy and euro helps the transaction move faster. Brauhaus has three locations around the Stuttgart area, but our favorite one is in Böblingen, just down the hill from Panzer Barracks. There is a parking lot outside the restaurant and if that’s full, you can always park along the street. For more information on hours and other locations visit their website. Don’t forget to try the daily specials and the banana beer!

  • Schwabengarten:

A typical German biergarten located near the airport. This is a great biergarten to visit on a nice summer or fall day. Come after work on a week night or early in the afternoon on a weekend and stay all night, relaxing with good company. Here you can relish in traditional German culture. Go to the window, grab what you would like to eat and drink, pay for it, find a seat and enjoy. If you really want to relax, grab a beach chair in their sand pit and sip your cold beer (or wine). Don’t leave the kiddos behind for this biergarten. There is a very nice playground in the back of the biergarten with enough stuff to keep them occupied for a few hours. Plenty of seats, but it is the place to be, so it does fill up rather quickly. I would recommend getting there early on a weekend, especially if you have a big party. Conveniently located behind the UBahn stop, public transportation makes this an easy place to get to and from. If you want to drive, there is a big parking lot in front of the biergarten. Visit their website for more information on hours and exact location.

  • The Cube:

This is a perfect restaurant for a date night or a special occasion. A little on the upscale side, with a pricier menu, it is worth it for the view and the great atmosphere. Located on the top floor of the Art Museum in downtown Stuttgart, in the middle of Schlossplatz (the main square downtown), floor to ceiling glass windows surround the rooftop restaurant and will have you in awe your entire dinner- ideal for people watching! The waiters are friendly, patient and speak great English. They were very helpful working through the menu with us. It is easy to get there by public transportation or your own vehicle, with many parking garages downtown-just don’t forget your euro for parking! The restaurant accepts American credit and debit cards. For more information on hours and exact location, visit their website. Try the shrimp curry starter, it won’t disappoint!

Places to shop and visit in Stuttgart

  • Milaneo Mall:

Conveniently located downtown, this is the newest of the malls here in Stuttgart. With over 200 shops inside, you’re sure to find something you like. The mall has name brand shops like Primark, H&M and Birkenstock, just to name a new. This is a great place for back to school shopping or just browsing. Shop `till you drop, then stop by Dunkin’ Donuts (yes, you read that correctly) while the kids play on one of the many indoor playgrounds. Most shops do accept American credit and debit cards, but I always bring euro with me, just in case. They also have some delicious, fresh restaurants located in the food court. This is a great place for a rainy day! More information on address and hours can be found here.

  • TK Maxx:

The German equivalent to TJ Maxx. Once you set foot inside the store you won’t know the difference between TK and TJ. They are identical in terms of store products. From name brand dresses to designer handbags, this is a great place to get up-to-date on the latest fashions and current trends. TK Maxx is located on the main shopping street in downtown Stuttgart. Their address is: Königstraße 18 70173 Stuttgart. They accept American credit and debit cards. • Beauty Lounge:

Located in Holzgerlingen, this is a great place to get pampered. Most likely the number one asked question on Stuttgart Friends is, “Where can I get my nails done?” The beauty lounge does a great job with nails, ask for Kelley! Don’t stop at nails, they also have hair stylists and waxing available. Their address is Bahnhofstr. 3 71088 Holzgerlingen and their website is here. Appointments are necessary.

  • BabyOne:

Baby One is a great place for all your baby needs. Whether it be for yourself, your baby, or a gift, they have it all. From clothes to bouncers, to all different kinds of bottles and pacifiers, this is your one stop shop for everything baby. I love going here to get gifts for friends having children. BabyOne has traditional German gifts and wooden toys which make great, unique gifts for those in the States or your next door neighbor! Located near the airport, they have a parking lot out front. Bring euro as they only accept German EC cards. For more information on products, location and hours, visit their website.

  • Patch Thrift Store:

Located on Patch Barracks, this is a great place to start when first arriving in Stuttgart, especially before your household goods show up. The Patch Thrift Store carries everything from 220 and 110 microwaves, to kettles, dishes, pots and pan, baby stuff, even clothes-some brand new with tags still on them! They also have transformers! I always recommend that newcomers see what the Thrift Store has before spending hundreds at the PX. I can’t say enough good things about the Patch Thrift Store. The workers are friendly and the shop is clean and well organized. Find them on Facebook at SCSC Patch Thrift Shop for daily sales and promotions! Their hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10 am-4 pm, Thursday 3pm-7pm and the 1st and 3rd Saturday from 10am-2pm. Volunteers are always needed at the Thrift Shop, as well. They are located behind the food court and in front of the commissary. Don’t forget about their awesome Thriftmas Market, scheduled this year December 1-3, for great deals on Christmas décor and gifts!

There are many more things that are great fun in the city of Stuttgart. It’s all about getting out there, trying new places and enjoying your short, but sweet time here!
