My husband and I have always had the travel bug, especially when it comes to travel that is more off-the-beaten path. Needless to say, one of the first things we did when we found out we were moving to Germany was to see if there were any odd Europe sights that we needed to see. We were not disappointed. In fact, one of the most unusual sights happens to be in Stuttgart!
Yes, you read that right. An entire museum dedicated to our friend, the pig.
It’s very easy to get to the Swine Museum, which makes this perfect for a little Saturday adventure. We took the train to the Hauptbanhof and then hopped on the U9 (get off at Schlachthof). When we got off the train I asked my husband, “which way now?” He looked around and said with a smile, “you have to be kidding me.”
It’s just a short walk to the pig bus which is in front of the museum. The courtyard is littered with pigs.
The museum is very easy to navigate. You walk in through the main door, turn a corner, and you see a gift shop. The entrance fee is small, adults and children 15 or older, € 5.90, children (6-14 years) € 3.00, Children (under 6 years) are free.
According to a good Stuttgart travel website this is the biggest pig museum in the world with over 50,000 pigs spread over 25 thematic rooms. Appropriately enough, this museum is located in the administration building of Stuttgart’s former slaughterhouse.
There is no way that my pictures can capture all of the amazing and bizarre exhibits that are in this museum, but here is a taste. You will have to go on your own to get the full experience!
Obviously, this is one of the strangest museums I’ve ever been in. That said, it was quite fun! Around every turn you were looking at something totally bizarre and random. There were quite a few people there walking around. Children were laughing at everything and adults were wandering around with these bewildered looks on their faces. I loved seeing the modified road signs. Aren’t you glad these weren’t on the driving test?
Now that we know that Europe is filled with more of these wonderful and amusing places, we can’t wait to see them all. We will be sure to report back.
