The Best Cake on Earth

One thing I liked growing up in a German family was the “coffee and cake” tradition. In the afternoon, everybody came together to have some coffee (hot chocolate or tea for the kids) and a good piece of German cake. Who makes the best cake on earth? Exactly, Grandma! One of my favorite cakes was the apple cake from my Grandma. You could taste every single little apple piece and I loved the crunchy crust. So one day, many years later, I brought my husband to my Grandma’s house and she made that apple cake. He loved the cake so much, from that day on she always made it just for him when we came for a visit. Since we moved it is harder to visit her and I asked her for the recipe so we can have that “coffee and cake at grandmas” feeling here too. So here is my Grandma’s famous apple cake recipe.

Oma Inge’s Apfelkuchen:

1 1/4 Cups Flour
3/4 Cups Sugar
3/4 Cups Butter
2 Eggs
2 Tea spoons Baking Powder
1 Pinch of salt
4-6 Apples (depending on size)

1.Mix the flour, butter, sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a dough, then leave it to rest for a while. In the meantime, peel your apples and cut them into large even pieces.

2.Grease a Cake form (10 inch diameter)  and sprinkle with flour.

3. Divide the dough into 2/3 and 1/3 parts. The larger piece is for the bottom of the cake. Roll it out and lay it into the baking form. It should cover the bottom and sides of the form. Pull the edges slightly  up and outside the form. Now lay the apples out evenly inside the form. Roll out the remaining dough for your top sheet. Carefully lay the top sheet over the apples ensuring everything is covered. I always use the baking form to cut out the top sheet, it ensures for a nice looking edge.

4. Bake the cake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes, until it has a light golden color. Finally, (after it has cooled) sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar.

5. Enjoy with a warm cup of coffee and good company!

  1. Hey! I tried to follow your recipe but you never mention when to add the eggs so I added them with all the other ingredients and then, because f the consistency of the dough I couldn’t separate it in 3 or “Roll it out”. I ended up, following another recipe (adding milk to make the dough more liquid) and I didn’t waste the batter but, can you double check the recipe and maybe fix it? I wanna give it another try 🙂 looks yummy!

  2. Can’t wait to try this recipe – my husband will be thrilled, I know!
This is a wonderful website! Makes me want to live in Germany again!
